Symbols of medieval Ireland

   Many of the castles in Ireland are found in the countryside, along with stone towers or walls. They were built by rich rulers for protection against invaders.

The Vikings later brought the concept of forti- fied enclosures. They built walls around en- tire settlements with towers to scout the surrounding regions.
